Block Management

Blocks are the content elements that you place within Layout Builder sections. They hold the actual content (text, media, lists, forms, and other components) that visitors see on the page.

What Are Blocks?

In Layout Builder, a block is a reusable or inline content element that occupies space within a section's column. Blocks can contain:

  • Custom content: Text, media, or other content entered directly in the block.

  • Existing blocks: Pre-built blocks such as menus, search forms, or branding elements.

  • Views blocks: Dynamic content listings generated by Views (e.g., recent articles, related content).

  • Field blocks: Displays specific fields from the current content item (e.g., title, body, author).

Adding a Block

  1. In the Layout Builder interface, click Add block within the section column where you want to place the block.

  2. A panel opens, allowing you to browse or search for blocks:

    • Create custom block: Enter content directly for a one-off block specific to this page.

    • Existing blocks: Select from blocks already configured on your site.

    • Content fields: Add blocks that display fields from the current content item.

  3. Select the block you want to add.

  4. Configure the block:

    • Title: Set a title for the block (and choose whether to display it).

    • Content: Enter or configure the block's content depending on its type.

    • Styles: Apply visual styles if available (see Block Styles).

  5. Click Add block to place it in the layout.

Configuring a Block

To edit a block that is already in the layout:

  1. Click on the block in the Layout Builder interface.

  2. Select Configure or Edit from the contextual menu.

  3. Update the block settings as needed.

  4. Click Update to save your changes.

Removing a Block

  1. Click on the block you want to remove.

  2. Select Remove block from the contextual menu.

  3. Confirm the removal.

The block is removed from the layout. If it is a reusable block, the block itself is not deleted. It is only removed from this particular layout.

Block Types

Common block types available in Varbase include:

  • Basic block: A simple block with a title and body field for custom text content.

  • Media block: Displays a media item (image, video, etc.).

  • Views block: Displays a dynamic listing of content based on a view configuration.

  • Menu block: Displays a navigation menu.

  • Webform block: Displays a webform for user submissions.

  • Content field blocks: Display individual fields from the content item (e.g., the main image, author name, or publication date).

Tips

  • Use descriptive titles for blocks to help identify them in the Layout Builder interface, even if the title is hidden on the front end.

  • Reusable blocks are shared across layouts. Editing a reusable block changes it everywhere it is used.

  • Inline (custom) blocks are unique to the specific layout where they are created.

  • Organize blocks logically within sections to create a clean, readable page structure.

  • Preview the page after adding blocks to verify placement and appearance.
